Some new e-commerce added
You may have noticed that we've added some ads and such to Sandcruiser (so far: Amazon and Google ads). We have mixed feelings about this move as on the one hand we've always tried to keep things ad-free, on the other hand we dispense a lot of information, some of it relevant and/or interesting and wouldn't mind having the site pay for itself.
If the ads bother you, you can eliminate them very easily. There is probably a way to do this in Opera, Safari, IE and whatever other browser you may choose, but I know how to do it in Firefox, so that is the info I'm going to provide. If others care to offer comments on the other browsers, I'll be sure to include them.
In Firefox there is a neat feature called "Add-ons". Essentially, you can add functions to the program by adding in little sub-programs. You do this by going to [Tools] and selecting [Add-ons].
On the resulting menu, click on the little window near the top with the magnifying glass and type "Ad block" then click the magnifying glass. It should find Ad Block Plus. Click that. Follow the directions to install it. You may have to restart Firefox at some point.
Once you've done that, go back to [Tools], [Add-ons], [Extensions] to see that you indeed have adblock installed.
Then direct your browser to Sandcruiser and check it out... it should look exactly the same as it did before :)
Hover over the part of Sandcruiser you don't want to see ever again. Hopefully that is the ads and not the content/photos/real estate info/jewelry info/etc.
Hover over, and RIGHT click on about the center of the advertisement. Then select "Adblock iFrame". It should pop up a window that says "Add new Filter" and there should be a long bit of html in the window. You can click OK and it should block that ad... but you may want to be a little smarter than that and instead edit the content there. On our site, for example, the amazon ad starts out with "http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=stevebroylesc-20" and goes on and on. Well, if you want to stop all the amazon ads on our site, just insert a * after the stuff above. Or cut n paste the following http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=stevebroylesc-20* into your window. Then click ok.
That should effectively block all amazon ads from your browser!!
You can do the same for the google ads on our site and any other site. You may have to tinker a little, but once you get it figured out, you'll be blocking ads on sites all over the place. I block the heck out of them!
On the other hand, if you don't mind the ads, go ahead and take a look at 'em. Click 'em even. Every time you do we run the chance of making a little money with which to keep this site running. Who knows? Maybe some day we'll make enough that we can quit our day jobs and start traveling full time again. But that seems darn unlikely!

And now for some humor...
If you like to laugh at other people's mistakes, THIS is a site for you. Don't let the cake theme fool you, there is real pain lurking in the midst of that page.

Jocelyn's Very Own Blog
Well, it finally happened. I gave in and created my very own little shelf in cyberspace. I've always loved the idea of a commonplace book, but never had the organizational skills to actually have the darn thing with me when I wanted to press a flower in it, draw a sketch in it, write a quote in it, or any of the other fabulous things one can keep and remember in a convenient, always accessible place. And then it dawned on me! I could have it all, not have to carry anything around with me, AND I could bore others at the same time. Two birds with one stone and all that! So I now have myself my very own blogspot
It'll mostly be about jewelry, living in Costa Rica, gorgeous sunsets, friends who are visiting, books I've read and quotes I like, good photographs and whatever else strikes my fancy and would otherwise go in a paperbound, compact storage space with a pretty cover that would inevitably be left sitting somewhere I wasn't.
My jewelry site is still up and running and is still where you go to buy gorgeous jewelry (even if I do say so myself).

Two More Travel Websites
I'm too lazy to go back and update our Links page right now, but I've recently found two new sites that I like.
They are both travel-centric more than Landcruiser-centric, which should please many of you. Neither is Central America oriented, but they are still fun.
Robb and Cat hop around the world some, they share pictures onBella's Adventures. Bella is their dog, might be as spoiled as our dog.
Also Dare 2 Go. Yasha and Juergen have been working their way through the USA, then Central America, now South America in a Ford with a camper. They've got some great stories and their site is a fun read. Wish we could have met them when there were in Costa Rica.
Hope you enjoy their sites.
On a less positive note: To the person (people?) writing multiple, empty comments that refer back to a website with the letters HQ that is based in Costa Rica. Stop it. You're annoying me. I let the first comment post because I'm nice and your blog has some decent content.
To end on an upnote: had an excellent dinner last night here at Laguna del Cocodrillo. Boy-howdy those guys make a mean potato-wrapped Corvina. Delicious!

Politics...
Feeling a little out of touch with US politics, Steve checked out the Department of Homeland Security web page for the first time today. Other similarly themed websites can be found here and here.
There are also more than a few websites that address the political and security changes made in the USA in the last few years. Hermes-Press.com makes some comparisons between modern US politics and those found in Germany in the Thirties. These posters reference Homeland Security's role in our society. The Homeland Security Institute contains several essays on current event topics and terrorism in general.
Finally, this site contains a long list of news items in a reverse chronological order. It has numerous links to what they claim are "opinions of the Arab street" as well as links to some of the horrors that are being faced by members of the military and civilians in the Middle East.
Interesting stuff. While I'm trying pretty hard to avoid infusing this with my own opinions, I am curious to hear other's opinions, so please feel free to leave a comment. If you aren't into commenting, no worries, poke through the links above if you like, or come back later to read more about surfing, landcruisers, our dog and the rest of the regularly scheduled program.
And speaking of our regularly scheduled program: We are now taking advantage of the puppy's need to pee at 4:30a.m. every day. As dawn um... dawned... we drove our landcruiser down to the beach for an early morning session. Frequent sets of chest high waves (with some overhead sets) for over two hours with a total of seven surfers in the water made for a nice, exhausting workout. Breakfast at Gil's place (amazingly delicious burritos) didn't do much to perk us up, but it did fill us up. Eating too much after early morning exercise is just the sort of thing to make one want to sit in front of their computer and read a bunch of rhetoric online....
